Global Study to Evaluate Whether Dengue Outbreaks Can Be Anticipated Earlier

About this episode

This video introduces E-Dengue, a new early-warning platform designed to help public health teams anticipate dengue outbreaks earlier and plan responses more effectively. E-Dengue translates predictive dengue modelling into a practical, open-source digital tool with web and mobile interfaces, supporting district-level decision-making. The platform is currently being implemented and evaluated in Vietnam as part of a major international research collaboration examining whether early warnings can support earlier, better-targeted public-health action.

The second phase of the project is led by Southern Cross University, with Dr Vinh Bui leading the development of the operational platform. The broader collaboration includes researchers from the University of Queensland, Yale University, and Vietnam’s National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, with funding support from the Wellcome Trust.

This work responds to the growing global risk of dengue, which the World Health Organisation estimates now affects nearly half the world’s population, and aims to build evidence on how early-warning systems can move from research into real-world use.
