Commandant Maksym V. Kiriakidi | How Crimea Became Russia’s Launchpad for Invasion

About this episode

In February 2014, Russian forces occupied and then annexed Ukraine’s Autonomous Republic of Crimea. It was a rupture that, according to a new analysis by a team of Ukrainian researchers, did far more than redraw a map. The peninsula’s geography let Russia dominate a semi-enclosed sea whose only outlets, the Bosphorus and Dardanelles, are controlled by Turkey, while Soviet-era bases, airfields and warehouses gave the Russian navy a springboard for expansion.
