We all shape our behaviour in response to social norms. These social norms are based on our own expectations of what other people do and believe. This means that they can shift in response to the behaviour of others, particularly ‘trendsetters’, such as celebrities and political leaders. Research shows that Donald Trump has significantly changed social norms in the USA. For example, his influence has increased prejudice towards immigrants and minority groups. Previous research has only examined how trendsetters change social norms in their own country. However, many leaders now have visibility that extends far beyond their own national borders.
