The research followed 249 patients diagnosed with low-grade B-cell lymphomas – a group of slow-growing blood cancers. Patients were recruited between 2011 and 2015, and their outcomes were tracked over five years. The central question was straightforward: does being anemic at diagnosis affect how long patients live?

Anemia is extremely common in cancer patients, but its precise role as a survival predictor in these specific cancers had not been fully established.

Dr Mondoc and her team found a clear and striking pattern. Patients with no anemia at diagnosis had the best five-year survival, while those with the most severe anemia fared worst. In fact, patients in the most severely anemic group survived for an average of just 35 months.

The team also found that more severe anemia tended to go hand-in-hand with more advanced stages of disease, and with higher levels of the enzyme LDH in the blood that signals cancer activity.

Importantly, Dr Mondoc’s findings point toward hope as much as they do risk. If anemia at diagnosis is a reliable warning sign, it raises a tantalizing question: could actively treating the anemia itself – through iron therapy, or blood transfusions – help improve survival outcomes? While the study does not answer this directly, it lays important groundwork for future research to explore that very possibility.

Dr Mondoc emphasizes that checking for anemia at diagnosis is quick and available in any clinical setting worldwide. Her work suggests it deserves serious consideration as a routine tool – one that could help doctors spot high-risk patients earlier, personalize treatment, and ultimately give more patients a better chance at survival.
