In the study, Dr. Mabetha and her colleagues engaged in in-depth discussions with eighteen pregnant women aged 18 to 28, listening closely to their personal stories. Rather than relying on surveys or statistics alone, the research focused on women’s own words and experiences, capturing the realities of pregnancy as it is lived day to day.

The findings show that support from partners, family members and friends can make a profound difference to how young women feel about their pregnancies and themselves.

Many women described how emotional reassurance, practical help and simple acts of care helped them accept their pregnancies and feel more confident about becoming parents.

For some, a supportive partner who responded positively to the news of pregnancy created a sense of safety and stability. Others leaned more heavily on their mothers, grandparents or siblings, who offered guidance, encouragement and hands-on support. Friends and peers also played an important role, sharing advice based on their own experiences and helping women feel less alone.

Dr. Mabetha’s research also highlights a more painful reality. When support was absent – particularly after partners or family members reacted negatively – women reported distress, isolation and difficulty coping with pregnancy-related changes. These contrasting experiences underline how uneven access to support can shape emotional wellbeing during pregnancy.

By centring young women’s voices, Dr. Mabetha’s work emphasises that improving maternal health is not only about medical care. It is also about strengthening the social networks that help women feel valued, supported and capable during one of the most significant transitions of their lives.
